Welcome to Dalarnas museum!

For the people of Dalarna, Dalarnas Museum is their own museum, a museum reflecting Dalarna for visitors and tourists. It is the only county museum in Sweden to have been awarded three stars in the Guide Michelin. We have over one hundred thousand visitors every year.

The museum has come to be known as "The Museum of Folk Art". We have one of Sweden´s largest collections of local folk painting, folk music, local costume and textiles and graphic art (the Falun School of Graphic Artists).
Selma Lagerlöf, the author, who moved to Falun in 1897, wrote some of her most important works here. Her library has been preserved and is to be found at the museum. Vigorous and exciting art programmes focussing on international exchange add to the attraction of the museum.

Our activities in the region are based on conservation of buildings, archaeological investigations and considerable cooperation with local history federations and local authorities. Dalarnas Museum is endeavoring to become the "hub of the province", where we present the museums and historical sights of the region.
Welcome to Dalarna and Dalarnas Museum.

The fortress-like building standing close to Faluån, the stream running through Falun, is built of specially fired brick. The architect Hakon Ahlberg designed both the building, which was inaugurated in l962, and the art museum from 1936, which forms an extension to the museum. Temporary exhibitions at the art gallery often offering new art, either Swedish or international in separate or comprehensive exhibitions, are renewed constantly.

Our art exhibitions at the museum receive special financial support from the Falun local council. The permanent exhibitions at Dalarnas museum reflect a rich and varied landscape. Current events and trends are illustrated in the temporary exhibitions and in our program of activities.
